"Popeye"

This is a good shot of a sunken fishing boat named Popeye near the South End of the island. We use it to gauge whether or not the South End passage is navigable. If the Popeye is submerged, it's safe to leave the channel and go out into the river, but if the Popeye is sticking up like this, you can walk across the channel without getting your ankles wet (as you can see in another picture here). You can also see five female Mergansers (a type of fish eating duck) just in front of the Popeye. Mergansers love our channel, they always hang out there in the winter.
